Is your gut impacting your mood?

    0

Naturopath and Kombucha City founder Gail Matthew explains how issues with our digestive system can have far-reaching consequences for our mental health.

Hands up if you know that overindulging in junk food leaves you feeling sluggish and unmotivated? Or have you noticed that when your fridge is packed with fresh fruit and vegetables, you feel happier and life seems to run more smoothly?

You are not alone – scientists are learning more about the gut-brain connection and how digestive health impacts mood and mental health.

    The gut-brain connection

For a long time, researchers and health experts thought anxiety and depression caused bowel issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea or constipation, bloating or stomach upset.

But now we know that only 10 percent of the nerves connecting the gut and the brain are sending messages from the brain to the gut. The other 90 percent are sending messages from the gut to the brain.

That means it’s likely that it’s actually bowel problems that are triggering our mood changes.

Doctor and author Giulia Enders, who specialises in gut health, tells us that the gut is an important advisor to the brain, which is a bit isolated at the top of our bodies. It sends messages about the quality of nutrients we are consuming, what our hormones are doing, how our immune system is working and what’s going on in our blood.

If the gut is signaling there is something not quite right, it can begin to impact brain function.

When you understand that interaction, it makes sense that people with ongoing bowel issues, such as IBS or inflammatory bowel disease are more likely to have a higher incidence of anxiety or depression.

Early research is also suggesting that digestion may impact our cognitive skills – thinking and memory function.

And with up to 30 per cent of the population likely to suffer from functional bowel issues (diarrhea or constipation, bloating or stomach upset) at some stage in their lives, the gut-mind connection may be impacting a large sector of the population.

    Improving our digestive health

One of the keys to looking after our digestive health is eating the right foods.

Aim to eat balanced meals offering a wide variant of nutrients and a good variety of fermented food. Here are some ways to ensure you are doing that:

    • Replenish the bacteria in your gut from a variety of probiotic sources. As well as stocking up on some delicious kombucha from Kombucha City, add other fermented foods such as cultured yoghurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, sourdough bread or fermented sausage to your diet
    • Eat a mix of cooked and raw vegetables
    • Ensure every meal contains carbs, protein and good fat – eggs on toast or wholegrain cereal with fruit and yoghurt are great examples of a balanced breakfast that will kick-start your day
    • Get nutrients from a variety of protein sources – don’t forget about nuts and seeds
    • Make your plate a rainbow – eat as many different coloured foods as possible
    • Remember that darker coloured fruit and vegetables contain more antioxidants. Eat the skin if possible – it contains most of the antioxidants

    Food Diary

    Food allergies and intolerances

Sometimes even healthy foods can upset our digestive system, impacting our mood, especially if we have food allergies or intolerances.

As a teenager and again as a new mum, I suffered from depression. When I discovered I was allergic to the nightshade family of vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, capsicums, chillis, and eggplants are all common nightshades) I removed them from my diet.

It was like a cloud had been lifted from my life.

It’s important that we listen to our bodies and allow them to give us feedback. Note how you feel when you eat certain foods.

If you suspect something you eat is having a negative impact on your mental wellbeing, keep a food and mood diary, so you can track your reactions.

    When to get help

It’s one thing to cut down on McDonald’s to feel healthier and happier but if you are dealing with digestive or mental health issues you can’t get on top of, talk to a professional, whether it’s a GP, nutritionist or naturopath.

If you suspect a particular food group is causing you issues, you may want guidance from a naturopath before you eliminate it completely from your diet to ensure you don’t miss out on essential vitamins and nutrients.

But most importantly, listen to your gut because it’s looking after your head and your health.

7 Tips about Work Life Balance and being a Mum

7 Tips about Work Life Balance and being a Mum

Work life balance has become more critical than before since we have been going through this pandemic.  As remote work has gained more importance to keep the ground running, it has become more significant to find work life balance. This is quite challenging for a working woman to manage both worlds i.e., work and  home.

I myself had to put an extra effort to balance out this equation while having three kids, with one having  Autism. Personally, I was always juggling between different priorities between kids and work. Home learning has added more to it and it has made it difficult to gather personal sanity. This stress and juggling  between priorities have caused much stress on everyone specially a working mum and impacted our  mental health.

There is no harm if you are finding it hard to get things accomplished. It is perfectly fine if you are unable  to complete any of your scheduled tasks. All the days are not the same as some days you are productive while  others are not. There are times when you feel frustrated with work and home both.

In this article, I have discussed a few tips and tricks based on my experience where a mum can navigate  through these challenges. The key thing here is that whatever happens, you need to keep your sanity  intact. You can start with planning your day and structure it in a way that the tasks are achievable and

having a good balance between your rest time slots. For this purpose, you can use digital planners or start  writing a diary for a daily schedule. There are so many free apps and software available in the market  which can help you plan your day.

Here are a few of my thoughts to share which might give you some great control to manage work-life  balance.

    1. Use digital planners/diaries or calendars

crop woman writing down notes in diary

As technology is playing an important role in our life, it is also evident that some of the digital  planning apps are making a difference in setting your daily routine. Reminders, schedulers, and  inter-connectivity between apps has made things easier and manageable. For example, a  software called “Microsoft To-do” helps me plan my day. On the other hand, I also use a calendar  hanging right on my kitchen wall, which helps me schedule the week with important  appointments. In this way, you are on top of your routine rather than being reactive to whatever event  comes.

    2. Priorities your work and home responsibilities

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels.com

Not everything we do on a daily basis is urgent or important. There are things which can be  postponed and there are a few things which are supposed to happen on the day they are planned for.  For example, paying the electricity bill has a set deadline which you should not forget and your  planner should help you plan this task. Contrary to this, you can skip a family movie every  weekend as the impact is not that high. For every mum, it is very important to set priorities for every day and week so Urgent-Important tasks take place first in the queue. Also, mums  with kids should also keep some buffer in managing emergency events or incidents.

    3. Plan ahead your weekly meals & groceries

If you are aware of the needs of your family, then it is really easy for you to manage your  weekly menu while keeping your budget in line. Choose a day in a week, plan the menu for the next  week and do the groceries accordingly. Freeze and pre-cook the food if you need, over the  weekend to support your week day routine. It definitely helps you even get sorted for the  lunchbox snacks/meals for the kids on a daily basis.

    4. Keep track of upcoming appointments

Being a working mum, it is always helpful to keep the upcoming appointments recorded in your  plans and digital diaries with reminders. Managing kids is a difficult task and keeping yourself on  top of all the medical, school and work-related appointments is quite challenging. I would suggest  having only one calendar management software which can serve the purpose for your work and  home related appointments, so only look at once central space to schedule your days.

    5. Keep mindfulness alive

photo of girl hugging her mom while doing yoga pose
Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels.com

Mindfulness in such a difficult time should be one of our top priorities. Work dynamics have  changed so the world around us has also changed since this pandemic happened. Mindfulness is  quite important for a working mum, especially when the days are crazy with work load. To ease things  on us and to get rid of any stress, mindfulness exercises are important to reflect on your daily  routine. Write a journal, do some yoga, do some paint brush or have a walk to keep your sanity  intact.

    6. Allocate some “Me” time

    woman in bath tub

In such a busy routine, taking time for yourself is hugely important. It impacts positively on your mental health and can improve your energies to hit the next goal. Sometimes having a short nap  during the day would be quite positive. In the morning, giving yourself ten minutes would be a  great idea before starting a hectic day. Have some me time, watch a movie, make a meal, go out  with your family or friends or colleagues. Do some cardio, keep your body active, have some dance  routine just to relax with the soothing music.

    7. Seek help when you need it

Humans are not robots, even robots need maintenance. Whenever you feel that you are  overburdened with the day-to-day routine and it is making you crazy, seek help before you impact  your mental health. Shout out if you are struggling to get something sorted. Seek help for daily  house chores routine from your family and friends. It is a great opportunity to get yourself  engaged with your loved ones and learn from each other’s experiences. Sometimes connecting  with your community to seek help with something could also be a great thought.

    8. Plan your holidays

    a woman carrying her child
Photo by Yan Krukov on Pexels.com

Holidays bring exciting times for a family. Being a mother, you might get stressed out with all the  planning and preparations for travel etc. It is always important to plan things ahead, do necessary  shopping for the family ahead of travel, if required and plan your travel destinations in advance.  You always feel less stressed and accomplished when you have sorted half of your routine by  planning your work and holidays already. Also, it is budget friendly which gives you extra  satisfaction.

All these tips and tricks are practically workable and do have results. I personally try to work  and plan my life accordingly. It is a proven fact that you cannot find and achieve perfection in  everything you do but learning and improving based on your experiences would make the  difference.

The Influence of Media on Lifestyle Trends

The Influence of Media on Lifestyle Trends

Throughout time, media has always played a part in our lifestyles; what we eat, how we dress, how we exercise. And as the use of technology is growing increasingly prevalent, it seems fitting that the influence of media has become too. Mass media not only influences fashion and lifestyle, but also individual attitudes and beliefs, economic trends, knowledge and information, and much, much more.

With the growth of social media, everyone has become a contributor to lifestyle and fashion sectors especially, where engagement is high and there are a variety of lifestyle and fashion communities. Influencers are one of the most common contributors on social media, amassing millions of followers, posting content targeted towards a niche. These users can build their own online communities – the larger the community, the trendier the style.

We can’t deny that in the past fifteen years, we’ve seen a rise in the online representation of plus-sized models and people of color. That being said, Ashley Graham was the first plus-sized model to walk the runway for Michael Kors, after being featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in 2016. Shortly after, more brands started to feature more plus sized models, such as Kate Wasley and Precious Lee.

So, the question stands to ask: Are our own tastes individually unique? Or are we influenced by the media around us to choose what we should like?

Good style is favorably rewarded with praise and compliments. But only if we know that others will like it too, right? So how do we know if our tastes are acceptable or not? Well, we simply look to the media. Is it trending? Do our favorite role models have the same tastes? Do our friends like it?

Even the way we look after our own bodies can be swayed. We can chase fad diets and exercise routines that we think will make us healthier or stronger, simply because that’s what we’ve seen most in the media. We’ll workout more often and more intensely, sometimes to the point of over-exhaustion, just to look similar to the bodybuilders on tv, or follow a sponsored fitness influencer whose body was sculpted with methods other than fitness.

Photo by Ivan Samkov on Pexels.com

So what makes media so influential in our daily lives?

Mass media is how we absorb most of our information. The news, blogs, social media, videos. We even absorb devastating news through viral memes. Technology has become such a core component in our lives and society that it wouldn’t make sense to suggest switching off the media and blocking everything out.

Instead, we should be using media to create real and consistent content. Trends quickly come and go, which encourages fast fashion to produce faster than ever before. Sponsored content is one of the biggest contributors to fashion and lifestyle influence. While it helps fund most media, it can convey false information to a large community. Ever bought something an influencer recommended, only to be disappointed?

young diverse ladies recording vlog about makeup products on smartphone, media, influencer, lifestyle,
Photo by George Milton on Pexels.com

Media will always have an influence on our lives. Which is also a good thing! But we don’t want to be constantly swayed by it. We need to embrace the individual and unique parts of ourselves! Live our lives expressing our true selves instead of being trapped in a constant state of conformity. Wouldn’t you enjoy shopping for something that you liked? Wouldn’t you enjoy exercising for yourself rather than to look like someone else? Just because something is trending, doesn’t mean you have to follow it. Not at the expense of your own health or financial stability. We need to pause and think, is this something that I really want?

The goal isn’t to become mindless, drones, with no original thought – unless, that’s something up your alley. But if we continue to mindlessly follow what we see in the media, we’ll become just that. Followers. Absorbing information with no critical thinking or personal input. Herd mentality is a dangerous path to follow; or maybe individuality is simply outdated.

What Is The Buzz About Kombucha?

What is the buzz about kombucha?

Naturopath and Kombucha City founder Gail Matthew gives us the lowdown on why this low-sugar tasty drink is your body’s new fermented friend.

If you have heard someone order kombucha at a café or seen a friend quaffing it from a wine glass at a party, you could be curious about the sudden rise in popularity of this drink. But before you dismiss it as the latest fad, you might want to check out its history and health benefits.

    What is kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented tea that has been around for nearly 2,000 years. It has a unique taste; slightly tangy, slightly sweet, possibly a little sour, depending on your palette. It was first brewed in China and then spread to Japan and Russia, before becoming popular in Europe in the early 20th century.

In recent years, as we’ve become more aware of the importance gut health has on our overall wellbeing, it’s progressed from being solely the domain of home-kitchen brewers to become a popular, commercially bottled drink.

It often comes in different flavours and can be enjoyed on its own or used as the basis of an alcoholic or non-alcoholic cocktail.

What is the buzz about kombucha?

    And the health benefits?

Because it’s fermented, kombucha is considered a good source of probiotics, which help promote digestive health, increased energy and a healthy metabolism.

There are hundreds of different species of probiotics living in our digestive systems and it’s important to replace them from a variety of sources.

That’s because the environment in our gut, our microbiome, needs a balance of good and bad bacteria to maintain a healthy digestive system, which in turn impacts every system in our body.

Food is fuel for human beings and our digestive system breaks down that fuel, extracting the nutrients and sending them around our bodies to sustain life.

If you are giving your system the right fuel and replacing the bacteria your gut needs to deal with it, everything will run better and you will feel healthier.

For example, did you know that 80 per cent of our immune system lies within the gut? Getting the right probiotics to balance our microbiome has an immediate flow-on effect on that immune system. It means you won’t get sick so often or expend so much energy fighting off infection. That’s vital for our health whether we are dealing with a global pandemic or just trying to avoid a winter cold.

What’s all the fuss about fermented food and drinks?

    fermented foods

Fermented foods have been part of the human diet for thousands of years and nearly every civilisation has at least one included in its culinary heritage.

Before we had refrigeration, our grandparents and great-grandparents fermented foods to preserve the nutrients and enable them to be stored longer.

But as refrigerators became more common in Kiwi households after World War II, fermented foods became less popular.

And when fermented foods disappeared from our tables, we also lost their health benefits. This is one of the reasons we have seen a greater prevalence of auto immune diseases, allergies and skin disorders.

Those conditions can be helped and supported by a diet that’s rich in probiotics. To do that, you need to consume a range of fermented foods because they all offer different types of probiotics.

So, alongside kombucha, look at increasing your consumption of food and drinks such as cultured yoghurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, sourdough bread or fermented sausage.

What to look for when buying kombucha

What is the buzz about kombucha?

Not all kombucha is created equal. A traditionally brewed, fermented, raw, unpasteurised kombucha is the only way to truly benefit from the full spectrum of health benefits on offer. Here are a few things to look out for when purchasing a quality kombucha product:

    • Does it need to be stored in a fridge? An unpasteurised kombucha needs to be kept refrigerated.
    • Sugar content – it should be low-sugar but not no-sugar. A traditionally brewed kombucha will have some sugar in it still, otherwise it will taste like vinegar. There should be no need for added sweeteners, natural or otherwise.
    • Taste – a fermented kombucha will taste slightly tangy, slightly sweet, possibly a little sour, depending on your palette. It should not taste too sweet or too tangy. Also if the flavour tastes washed out, then the kombucha brew may have had water added before being bottled. Some companies do this to reduce the sugar content, but unfortunately it also reduces the health benefits.
    • Probiotics – the probiotics appear naturally in a traditionally brewed kombucha, without needing to be added. You would not normally find them listed as ingredients on the bottle.
What is the buzz about kombucha?

Kombucha is a delicious, versatile way to start your journey with fermented food. Why not give it a go?

What’s Cooking With Simon Gault: The Ultimate Guacamole Recipe

What’s Cooking With Simon Gault: The Ultimate Guacamole Recipe

Here’s some tips and secrets for the best, easiest guacamole.

    Ingredients

    • 3 whole ripe avocados
    • ½ white onion, finely diced
    • ¾ cup diced tomato flesh
    • 1 small bunch fresh coriander, finely chopped
    • ¼ medium garlic, finely grated
    • 2 tablespoons lime juice
    • 2 teaspoons jalapeno Tabasco
    • 1 teaspoon salt

    Simon says:

Cut around each avocado, from stem to blossom end and back again, then twist the two halves apart. Dislodge the pit and scoop the avocado flesh into a bowl.

Take care here; this is where a lot of people cut themselves. If you’re smart using the chopping board to ensure you don’t slice your hand into two.
Using an old fashioned potato masher or a large fork, smash your avocados.
Go chunky. Tastes differ, but I find that most people enjoy coarse-textured guacamole with chunks of avocado.

Not only is the texture of the guacamole satisfyingly wicked but it shows your guacamole is the real deal.

Finely chop the onion then scoop up the onion into a strainer and rinse under cold water. Shake off all the excess water and add into the avocado

Cut the tomatoes in half then using a teaspoon or tablespoon depending on the size of your tomatoes and remove the interior of the tomatoes.
Using a sharp knife cut the tomatoes into a dice. Now scoop them up and add into your bowl.

Take the coriander as little or as much as you like. Roll it up and cut into what in kitchens we call chiffonade.

Garlic: Some people like their guac with garlic, others like it without. I love just a little. Grate a quarter of a medium clove into your guac.

Now juice the lime. I like to measure the amount, often people will go a little crazy with too much lime juice to stop the guoc going brown. It’s not a lime guacamole.

Traditionally jalapeño or Serrano chilli is used. Good luck with finding either of those so I am using Jalapeno Tabasco which is available online or at most supermarkets.

Add as much or as little as you like I am adding 2 teaspoons.
    Season with your favourite salt.

Mix well; taste it now and adjust for your taste preference. Feel free to add some cracked pepper.

    Serve with corn chips.

Store prepared guacamole, transfer it to an airtight container and pack down to release any air bubbles. Slowly pour water over top of guacamole to cover, then secure lid and refrigerate. Those method works really well for up to 24 hours.

When ready to eat, pour water out of container, stir guacamole and serve.
Alternatively, instead of covering with water, you can press a piece of plastic wrap over surface of guacamole before securing lid.
This isn’t as foolproof as the water method, but still works well!

What’s Cooking With Simon Gault: BBQ Tuna Steaks Recipe

What’s Cooking With Simon Gault: BBQ Tuna Steaks recipe with Moroccan Broccoli and Crispy Bacon Salad

Love food? Love flavour? If so, check out this super tasty recipe.

Tuna has numerous health benefits, as well as being fast and easy to cook, and this recipe can be cooked on a stove top OR out on the BBQ.

Served with a gorgeously light and crunchy broccoli and crispy bacon salad, this is perfect for an alfresco luncheon or light dinner with family and friends.

    SIMON SAYS…

    – Don’t throw away the broccoli stem, thinly slice and use in a stir-fry.
    – If you like it spicy, add a finely sliced red or green chilli either to the broccoli salad or to the dressing.
    – Leftover chillies will last a long time in the freezer.
    – If you prefer, drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice over cooked tuna steaks instead of tuna dressing.
    – Any remaining Moroccan coconut dressing will keep for up to a week in the refrigerator – pour it over fish, potato salad, grilled veges – goes well with just about anything!

5 Essential Style Elements for your Fall Wardrobe

5 Essential Style Elements for your Fall Wardrobe

As fashion trends come and go, each season brings about new trends and styles different from the last. From plaid patterns and berets, to skinny scarfs and fur vests, trends can seem unpredictable and unorthodox. Or to be blunt – tacky.

In the past, warm tones and soft drapey fabrics have often been the highlight of autumn-themed attire. In conjunction with the iconic pumpkin-spiced lattes and the flaky auburn leaves scattered on the sidewalks, the autumn aesthetic has always represented an ideology of harvest and transformation; whether this translates to abundance, maturity, growth, or even literally, harvesting crops.

However, no matter what trends push their way into this warm season, there is always one style that continuously prevails.

The Classic style is a timeless style that consists of elevated basic pieces to create a sophisticated look and a clean silhouette. Even if the Classic style isn’t your forte, you will still have a foundation to develop your own attire from.

    Fall Wardrobe,

    5 Essential Elements for Autumn

    Basics

Firstly, we begin with basics. A desirable wardrobe needs to start with a solid foundation. Basic pieces such as plain tank tops, long sleeve and short sleeve t-shirts, button-down blouses, and so on, bring a crisp look to an outfit. Layering such basics creates an elevated look, and are easy to dress up without looking too overcrowded.

A wardrobe full of statement pieces can never truly look put together. Basics are the essential building blocks for fashion that work together with other statement pieces and accessories. They tone down an outfit in order for the wearer to build it up without going over the top. A chunky knit sweater can look amazing in Autumn with plain denim jeans; But not with a patterned floor-length skirt.

    Neutral palette

Neutral colors have always been an everlasting element in universal fashion. Though they’ve never been at the forefront of mainstream fashion, their timelessness has always laid in the background, and are soon to be making a more prominent comeback as the fall season approaches.

Owning a neutral palette doesn’t just mean sticking to black and white. Beige, brown, gray, cream, and taupe are also considered neutral colors. I wouldn’t consider myself an expert on color theory, but although neutral colors are not featured on the color wheel, they immensely complement primary and secondary colors such as red and blue. Once again, just like with basics, we aim to create a balance of colors and elements of an outfit.

Too many colors can look unpleasant and unnatural. Bright colorful clothing and funky patterns have always made a statement, however those trends have a consistent pattern of rapidly infiltrating the mainstream media, then disappearing just as quickly. 2021 welcomed back Y2K (Year 2000) fashion, for a brief few months, and is now almost out of sight.

    Jackets and Coats

Although not every outfit requires outerwear, it can help elevate your overall look. Coats and jackets create silhouettes; Cropped jackets create more emphasis in the shoulders, creating an hourglass silhouette; Trench coats create long vertical lines that elongates and refines an individual; Blazers create sharp edges that make an individual look more refined and cleaner. Even oversized puffer jackets create volume in the upper body and can create the illusion of a runway look.

Coats and Jackets can act as statement pieces and upgrade a simple outfit to a stylish one. As the fall season becomes chilly, it is handy to note the impact that outerwear has on a look.

    Wide leg trousers

Everyone has trousers. Slacks, jeans, flares, joggers. But the one type of trousers that stands out are the wide leg trousers.

Extremely flattering and chic, wide leg pants provide the comfort and mobility that tight-fitting pants do not. They are the perfect pair of pants for volatile weather – rather than switching from shorts to trousers, wide leg pants are my favorite for keeping cool and comfortable all day. Their casual, yet classy look makes any outfit look extremely refined, and at such minimal effort!

As skinny jeans have moved out of the spotlight, wide leg pants are making their way deeper into the fashion industry. Comfort and practicality are becoming more prominent features amongst fashion, as baggy clothing is becoming more popular.

    Jewelry

No matter what you choose to wear, accessorize with jewelry! Minimalistic and classic jewelry can compliment an outfit, however, other types of jewelry can have the opposite effect.

Your accessories should match the style of your outfit. Necklaces, bracelets, rings, should not overpower the main features of your attire. Throughout history, jewelry has been used to highlight the natural features of its users – and that hasn’t changed a hundred years later.

How To Look After Elderly Cats

How To Look After Elderly Cats

In this video, Anne Batley – Burton, one of the stars of TV show ‘The Housewives Of Auckland’ and founder of the NZ Cat Foundation shares how to look after elderly cats.

Sadly, there are many abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens in our communities. Anne and the aim of the NZ Cat Foundation is to de-sex, vaccinate, and microchip every stray cat, in the hope that one day each of them will have a loving home.

What does the NZ Cat Foundation do?

The NZ Cat Foundation is committed to educating the community, particularly New Zealand youth. Education of our new generation is paramount, teaching our young people to embrace their responsibility to care for their cats. The foundations stance is that we do not have a “cat problem”; we have a “people problem” so Anne is doing her part to educate and inspire others to love and look after cats – whether they’re domesticated or strays – in the most humane way possible.

The foundation, based in Huapai, provides a sanctuary to more than 200 unwanted stray or elderly cats in a protected environment where all their needs are met in an indoor/outdoor environment. They are attended too through the kindness of volunteers who regularly give up their time to clean the facilities, feed the cats and give them the care and attention they deserve.

If you’d like to donate to support the incredible work Anne and her volunteers are doing to ‘help the helpless’ please do on their website: https://www.thenzcatfoundation.org.nz/
