Making the World a Better Place With Charity Tea – Product Review
There’s nothing quite like the warmth a cup of tea brings you on a cold day. But what if we told you that warmth could be amplified by knowing your tea purchase is doing good in the world? Charity Tea is doing just that by offering you a tea that not only tastes good but feels good.
What is Charity Tea?
Charity Tea is a New Zealand social enterprise business selling tea that nourishes. We’re not just saying that their products are healthy and delicious (which they are). But what’s even more amazing is that Charity Tea helps to provide thousands of meals to children both in New Zealand and overseas. You can rest easy knowing that with every purchase you make, you are receiving high-quality, organic, and ethically sourced tea while also providing a child in need a meal.
How did this all start?
Charity Tea began when Gill Bredl, the founder, received a phone call from Haiti. Her friend, who was working for a non-profit there, told her about a baby girl who was starving and asked if Gill was willing to help her. She agreed and sent money to feed the child for a year, but quickly realized this wasn’t an isolated incident.
She found out that many children in Haiti only had 1 or 2 meals a day, so she started a charity asking friends and family to donate money to help those children. As she was working on this charity, she also learned that many children right in New Zealand were going to school without lunch and felt compelled to help them as well. So, she decided to start a business that would generate revenue to help feed kids.
How did Gill land on a tea business? Well, she had a dream! No, literally. One night, Gill dreamt that she started a tea company called Charity Tea and it became super successful. Thus, Charity Tea was created, and the rest is history.

Charity Tea’s Impact
Charity Tea doesn’t stop their work at just providing meals to children, they give back to the community in a variety of other ways:
- They minimize negative environmental impacts by making sure their packaging is biodegradable, compostable, refillable or recyclable.
- In an effort to combat climate change, they offset around 120% of their carbon footprint for all business activity in 2019.
- They advocate for the Rarakau Rainforest Conservation Project, which you can find more information about here: https://ekos.co.nz/projectsblog/rarakau-rainforest-conservation-project
- They make sure that the workers from where they source their tea from receive fair wages and good working conditions.
The Tea Itself
Charity Tea offers a wide variety of flavors, ranging from Jasmine, Peach, Chamomile, Peppermint, Green tea, and more. Their high-quality organic tea is blended by herbal experts to provide the greatest health benefits. To make sure you never run out of the good stuff, they also offer what’s called “Tea Plans” that will deliver a personalized tea kit every month straight to your door! And if you want to switch it up, they make it really easy for you to change your plan or the flavors in your subscription.
Our Verdict: Our team tried the Royal – Organic Earl Grey and the KAWA – Organic Kawakawa with lemon and ginger teas and LOVED both of them! They tasted even better knowing that we’re supporting a good cause.
